今年は12月13日にスピーチコンテストを実施します。

今年からルールが変更になり、エントリー制となりました。後期授業が始まり、エントリーしている生徒たちは原稿作りに勤しんでいます。

Many of the students are now hard at work in classes after an eventful summer holiday.  Many stories have been shared and new clothing and hairstyles revealed.  For thirteen students, however, the race to prepare an interesting story, anecdote, or some useful advice has begun.  This year has many changes from previous contests such as student will have little or no help during class.  This means the students have to do more of the preparation by themselves and get only advice from their teachers.

The topics of this year’s competition are going to include a huge variety.  Not to give any spoilers, there are some speeches that are tackling the big issues affecting society on the local and global stage.  These students are busy researching up-to-date information that they can use to inspire the audience to get involved in social action.  They are using their developing English skills to connect international news with projects in Osaka as well as in Japan.

This is the first KIHS Speech Contest for many of this year’s participants.  Some of the first year students have decided to enter the Foundation Contest (running for the first time this year), which gives them the chance to compete with other beginner to lower intermediate students.  The short speech length of 300 words allows them to develop their skills and achieve a more attainable goal.

Finally, the Main Contest is looking increasingly competitive and any of the participants could take the \10,000 prize home.  This contest includes students from all three grades although only from the higher levels of English.  The participants have begun work on their 600 word speeches with their English teachers with many interesting topics emerging.  The longer length is becoming a challenge for some who are more used to short speeches that have key facts rather than detailed descriptions.

Now that the speech writing is under way, this year’s contests are shaping up to a thrilling clash of unique topics and interesting presentation styles.
